Most fantasy writing is cotton candy, sweet and predictable.  The worst is cotton candy with non-digestible fillers.  Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion duology is neither but reflecting on what it is not is inadequate.  Both books fit into that rare category of fantasy based on spiritual fact.  There are others of course.  Robert Holdstock's Ryhope ( Read more... )
